Interestingly over here (UK) commentators who should know better get this wrong the other way round. If a player passes to his teammate who is offside and it takes a deflection off a defender, lots of idiot commentators here say that he is therefore onside. Which is of course nonsense, for the same reason as the example in this video being onside. Even ex-pros do it, which is embarrassing for everyone involved, frankly.
The deflection does not make him offside. Presuming that the league goes by FIFA rules (as in, the actual rules of football/soccer), and not a special MLS rule that I don’t know about.
