  1. He was onside when the ball was played by his teammate – if he’s offside when the defender touches it, that’s too bad for the defender.

He was onside – it was a valid goal.

  2. Interestingly over here (UK) commentators who should know better get this wrong the other way round. If a player passes to his teammate who is offside and it takes a deflection off a defender, lots of idiot commentators here say that he is therefore onside. Which is of course nonsense, for the same reason as the example in this video being onside. Even ex-pros do it, which is embarrassing for everyone involved, frankly.

  3. The deflection does not make him offside. Presuming that the league goes by FIFA rules (as in, the actual rules of football/soccer), and not a special MLS rule that I don’t know about.

Players are offside depending on their position at the last point that the ball was touched by *their teammate*. Deflections off the opposition make no difference. Otherwise if a through ball was played and the striker outpaced the defender, he would only have to get a toe on it to make the forward offside.

  4. deflection is what makes him offside to me..when the shit was taken by cooper he was clearly onside but when it took that deflection it looks like he is in a offside position..soooooo close though

  5. just to let you know he is not CLEARLY onside..to me that actually looks offside because of the deflection..he was onside when the ball was kicked but since it took a deflection if you pause it at 4:10 when it takes the deflection it looks to me that he is behind of the last defender..not even with him..tough angle to see but is def not CLEARLY onside..been referring for 13 years..cant say i would have called it offside or even onside because im not there so dont have right angle

  6. look again at Blas’ goal. The eastside stands were pretty much full. There was a sellout the week before. Attendance has increased every season since 2010.

  7. Don’t know wdf Rennie is smoking with that piece of shit lineup.

  8. Im getting real tired of listening to these idiots every week. They know nothing about football.

  9. Rennie, Rennie, Rennie…what’s going on? And leave Joe alone, where the hell is the defense?

  10. Whitecaps should pick up Brad Friedel. Still a good keeper at age 40 and could probably be bought on a free transfer.

  11. So far onside it’s unreal. Maybe he thinks the deflection makes a difference?

  12. Jackson is too good to play for Dallas. Deserves a better team like LA or RSL
