England are through to the semifinals at the ongoing UEFA European Women’s Championship after Georgia Stanway scored a stunner in extra time to help her team secure a 2-1 comeback win over Spain. Bayern Munich forward Stanway scored the winner in the first half of extra time at the expense of Spain to ensure that hosts England stay alive in their quest to rule womens soccer in Europe for the first time.

As far as the UEFA European Women’s Championship is concerned,England have never been champions though they have lost two finals. In the maiden addition in 1984, they were beaten by Sweden on penalties after the two teams played an aggregate scoreline of 1-1 in two games. The Swedish team won thanks to a 4-3 victory during penalty shootout at the end of the second game. At the 2009 edition in Finland, Germany won their fourth title in a row by beating England 6-2 in the final. The Germans then won two more titles to make it six in a row before their reign over womens soccer in Europe ended at the 2017 edition in the Netherlands.
